Women students in information technology at Seattle Central Community College
are seeking opportunities to shadow IT professionals on their job for a few
hours one day. Our student body is highly diverse and includes women from around
the world. Most of our students have never worked in IT, or are moving into
another field in IT (networking, web design, web programming, database design
and administration, or programming).
Our students have very basic questions about what a typical work day in their
field will look like, what skills they will need, and what the pace and culture
of the workplace is like. As students acquire technical skills, they also need
to polish interpersonal skills and business appropriate behaviors. Seeing
professionals in their daily environment will help students strengthen and
refine their work ethic and reinforce their confidence in their ability to
prepare for their new career.
To support them in this transition to the IT workforce, Seattle Central
Community College Information Technology program would like to request your
assistance. Your contribution would be simply to provide an opportunity for a
student to observe you at work for a few hours one day and to discuss your
experiences in your field with her. Students will sign a non-disclosure
agreement to protect your business confidentiality. This program will begin in
late February 2010 and extend to April 2, 2010. Please feel free to forward this
message to any other IT professionals that you think might be interested in
helping.
