You are the CEO, COO,CFO or VP of Finance, or VP of Operations. You have a full plate, but you are also responsible for Human Resources. Am I right?
As a VP of Operations you have projects to implement and an office to run. As the CFO or VP of Finance you have a top line to watch and a bottom line to manage. 1. If you currently have someone internally managing Human Resource ask yourself if they are tactical, strategic, or both. Common problems include too many direct reports (i.e. > 5-7), a strong individual contributor who has somehow managed to build a large base of direct reports but has no leadership or management skills, functional sub-groups under the wrong group, “holes” in a department, or “equal partners” with no clearly defined authority points. Keeping an eye on the organizational chart of a rapidly growing business and making corrections before they’re needed is essential to effective execution.
5. Know what your people care about. When you started out, the team was all young, single, and didn’t care about things like health benefits or EAPs or even having a 401(k) plan. Does the group still look the same now, 2 or 3 or 4 years down the road? As demographics of the team change, the package offered should reflect the members you’re trying to keep on board, and also those you’re trying to recruit.

Having these easy to digest steps is helpful in getting the right priorities done at the right time. I think focusing on the business, driving revenue, and completing key business intiatives is paramount, but at the same time not forgetting that it takes people who are dedicated and determined to get there is something all we executives need to be reminded of from time to time.
HR is important in any company's success and this is a great Forum to remind us of that on a regular basis. I look forward to more posts!

When do you think the right time is to have an HR professional join the team? These are great points, and we depend on our accountant to help us out on some of this-payroll, benefits--but she is not really knowledgeable on the "people" part of HR. Also, she has not been able to help us with our staffing plan and compensation. What is your opinion of the right time and should it be someone inside our a consultant like you?

Great question! First, don't "open the Pandora's Box" by asking about everything all at once - have a reason for asking the question(s) and plan to respond. For instance, at open enrollment time, draft a quick survey to see which benefits people are using, which they care about, and which they don't use or ever plan to. Get some feedback on what's working and what isn't. Ask "if this then that" questions, like "if you could increase the deductible to XX or increase Prescription co-pays, which would you rather do" to involve them in tough decisions. Or, "if we can add one benefit, would you rather have a 401(k) match, or dependent premium assistance?". As your demographics change, you may be surprised to find that people value certain benefits more than others - respond within the budgetary constraints of your benefits program and then let them know you heard them and acted on their feedback.
One of our clients brought us in after they had their employees identify needed improvements to the organization and the top "ask" was HR. He responded quickly by seeking us out and bringing on our consultant to fill this role - powerful response to his team's request.
So, don't bite off a bigger bite than you can chew, but think about the areas where you can start having conversations or receive feedback - your team will appreciate the effort!
