Security Topic of the Month - Hypocrisy of E-Commerce

Are e-commerce businesses being hypocritical (at a minimum) when they make representations about the "security" of online transactions?  How secure do you think "online transactions" really are?

Most company's who are involved in e-commerce in some way try to ensure its customers/users that the "information being transmitted is secure" (either through some form of encryption or "https"), yet e-commerce fraud and abuse is a growing criminal enterprise.

Re: Security Topic of the Month - Are IP addresses private data? If so, what should the retention policy be?

I am facilitating a panel of privacy, industry and law enforcement experts on 7/13/09 at 6 to 8 pm (PST) for the WTIA (WA Technology Industry Assoc.) in Seattle to answer this question.

I would be interested in what your thoughts are on this topic in light of Judge Jones 6/6/09 decision.
Court: IP Addresses Are Not 'Personally Identifiable' Information http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=109242

What about HIPPA and financial data under GLBA?

More information to consider can also be found on Peter Fleischer’s (CPO Google) Blog http://peterfleischer.blogspot.com/2007/02/are-ip-addresses-personal-data.html

You can catch the panel discussion on Twitter: #WTIA

Re: Security Topic of the Month - Hypocrisy of E-Commerce

Christian Ekstrand at TeknikMagasinet says that only a small number in a particular batch of usb memory sticks that TeknikMagasinet manufacture themselves in Taiwan were infected and that “only 50 usb memory sticks were infected” (as far as he knows). Mr Ekstrand says that he can however not speak about how many , if any, of the customers of TeknikMagasinet that bought the particular products were affected by the incident. He also says that this is the first incident over the last 4-5 years that TeknikMagasinet has co-operated with the particular plant in Taiwan. Also, he said that the reason to why the Computer Sweden reader didn’t hear from TeknikMagasinet was that they weren’t able to reach him and that they in no way or form is trying to tone down the incident.
